Assistance to Mauritian in Distress
Mauritians in distress abroad can request for consular assistance from our Diplomatic Missions/Consulate and Honorary Consulates overseas. It includes
attending to difficulties faced by Mauritians abroad ranging from problems encountered during studies to assault/robbery cases and loss of passports/personal belongings.

Death of Mauritians Overseas
Special arrangements have to be made with our Missions abroad for the landing of mortal remains supported by relevant documentation.
The following information or documentation about the deceased should include:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Passport number / NID
- Next-of-kin of the deceased person (if you are not the closest relative)
- Contact details of relatives in Mauritius
- Death Certificate ( From the Hospital/Medical Doctor certifying the Cause of Death)
- Embalming Certificate (which can be received from the Funeral Parlour)
Civil Status Matters
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade acts as a bridge between the Civil Status Office and our Missions
and Consulates abroad on matters relating to marriage, registration of births among others.
Certificate of Character
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade liaises with the Police and Judicial authorities for Mauritian
nationals requiring those documents abroad. Applications made from abroad can be processed through the Mauritian Embassy/ High Commission in
the country where application is made.
Authentication of Driving Licenses
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade provides the bridge between the Office of the Commissioner of
Police and Missions abroad on the authentication of driving licenses.
Legislation of Documents
Mauritius being a party to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 abolishing the requirement of legalisation for foreign public documents has
brought about a basic simplification to the formalities of legislation of public documents outside the countries from which they emanate. These
formalities of legalisation have been reduced to the delivery of a certificate in a prescribed form entitled "Apostille" through the Prime Minister’s
Office which is then countersigned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is to be noted that Apostille service is Free of Charge.
Transfer of sentenced Mauritian detainees
The Protocol can assist in facilitating the transfer of sentenced Mauritian detainees from foreign prisons to enable them to spend the rest of their
sentence in Mauritius. Transfer of sentenced persons may be effected in accordance with Commonwealth Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons or under
Bilateral Agreements signed between Mauritius and Foreign States.
Extradition Procedures
The Protocol facilitates the process of extradition in consultation with all concerned authorities. We also assist in the conclusion of appropriate agreements
with foreign countries to this effect.
Citizen Matters
The Directorate attends to requests for information on claim/ renunciation/ application in respect of Mauritian citizenship and liaises with the
Prime Minister's Office with respect to such matters.
Views, advice and assistance on Protocol Matters
The views, advice and assistance of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade on Protocol matters are regularly
sought on a number of issues relating to the ceremonial system of fixed rules and accepted behaviour.
Such requests include information on order of precedence, food preferences, types of gifts, order of names on a Memorial Plaque, seating plan, events
management and other matters that sometimes require meticulous thought and enormous responsibility.
Trade Policy Information
The International Trade Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade is a specialized unit responsible to
formulate and implement trade policies and negotiate trade agreements at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels. It aims at creating a conducive trade
policy environment for Mauritius to position itself on the world market and to increase its trade share.
