Albion Fisheries Research Centre (AFRC)
The Albion Fisheries Research Centre (AFRC) was established in 1981/1982 with the assistance of the Government of Japan under a Grant Aid Project and it is operational since June 1982, under the aegis of the Ministry of Fisheries.
Competent Authority Seafood
The Competent Authority Seafood is a public body under the aegis of the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping and is responsible for the verification and certification of fish and fish products for export primarily to Member States of the European Union (EU) as well as to non-EU countries.
Fisheries Training and Extension Centre
The Fisheries Training and Extension Centre (FiTEC) situated at Pointe aux Sables was set up through a grant from the Government of Japan to provide additional facilities for the development of off lagoon fishing and training of fishermen.
Fisheries Protection Service
It caters for an efficient control over the fishing activities not only in lagoon and off lagoon but also in respect of regional fishing under bilateral conventions and regional cooperation with joint patrol under the Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (M.C.S) Programme in the EEZ and over territorial waters of the Republic of Mauritius.
Mauritius Maritime Training Academy
The school was established initially to provide pre-sea training at sea to young school leavers. Eventually the school provided training to all categories of ratings in order to constitute a pool of seamen for employment locally and in foreign shipping companies.
Monitoring Control Surveillance (MCS)/ Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) /Port State Control and Import / Export Division
The main objective/s of the division are amongst others to implement the conservation and management measures for:
- combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing;
- monitoring licensed fishing boats/vessels in the EEZ of Mauritius through the VMS;
- keeping the port free of illegal fishing boats/vessels;
- controlling import and export of fish and fish products;
- ensuring that only legally caught fish are traded; and
- ensuring a continuous supply of safe fish and fish products for local consumption.
Shipping Division
The Shipping Division of the Ministry of Ocean Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping is responsible for:
- ensuring the safety and security of ships
- the protection of life and property at sea and the marine environment
