The Republic of Mauritius has a comprehensive social security system which includes: (i) the monthly payment of universal basic pensions, and contributory pensions; (ii) Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities; (iii) Elderly welfare, medical care and Protection; and (iv) Social assistance schemes (social aid) to the needy persons/families, assistance to charitable institutions and Unemployment Hardship Relief (UHR) for unemployed heads of households on a means tested basis.
