Governance and Administration
The Republic of Mauritius has a long tradition of parliamentary democracy. Firmly attached to democratic principles, the country retained the Westminster style of Government when it was proclaimed independent in 1968. The Constitution guarantees the separation of the legislative, executive and judicial powers. Since 1992, Mauritius is a Republic where the Head of State is the President of the Republic and the Government is led by the Prime Minister. The political scene is remarkably stable. Mauritius takes pride in being a mature democracy with strong institutions. The Government is elected on a five-year basis. The Constitution provides for the Parliament of Mauritius to consist of the President and the National Assembly. The Prime Minister is the leader of the House.
