Justice and Defence
The Constitution of Mauritius guarantees the fundamental rights of citizens, namely: right to liberty and protection of the law, freedom of conscience, freedom of association, of movement and of opinion, freedom of expression, freedom of creed and of religious belief and the right to private property. Since independence, Mauritius fostered its socioeconomic development based on the values of democracy that is closely interrelated to fundamental freedoms, good governance, the rule of law, and the promotion and protection of human rights. It is engaged in the enforcement of human rights as a powerful tool for creating a culture of democracy in the pursuit of socially valued progress.
